Learning from Chennai Flood

Recent flood in Chennai was totally unexpected and people living in Chennai were taken unawares. Water rushed into homes, lives were lost and properties damaged. Millions of personal documents of people have been lost or damaged. In panic, fleeing people have abandoned them. Important papers like Property titles, Insurance policies and Medical records etc were not to be found now. We offer three solutions on digitizing and e storing them.

Firstly, we had  blogged  on 12th June 2013 on digitizing and  e- storing the documents,http://maxsecfp.in/component/k2/item/58-maintain-your-documents-online which has since been visited more than 46,000 times. It has been found useful by many.

Secondly, Central government has launched a scheme called DigiLocker. Anyone having an Aadhar card can login to  digitallocker.gov.in and upload scanned copies of all the important documents. So whenever,one needs those documents for verification by govt agencies, one  can directly give the  locker number and it is done! No more hassles of carrying those documents and tons of photocopies.The following documents can be stored in digilocker;

  1. Aadhar Card, Ration Card , Voter I'D and Driving License
  2.  PAN Card and Passport, including Visa Pages
  3. Birth Certificates , School Certificates and . Degree Certificates
  4. Medical prescriptions, medical history and Prescription for eye lenses
  5. Insurance Certificates and policies of  Life Insurance
  6. Health Insurance policies and cards
  7. Vehicle Insurance papers, Home Insurance policy
  8. Vehicle Registrations and Tax tokens
  9. Property Papers for home, shop and farm
  10. Fixed Deposit  Receipts and Loan agreements
  11. Warranty Papers for important items of purchase
  12. Income Tax returns and  acknowledgements
  13.  Employment Record, including Appointment letters of  previous companies, Salary Slips, Relieving Letters.
  14. Will

The feedback on digilocker is not satisfactory and it may take some more time to stabilize.

Thirdly, one may  also scan and store the above documents  in a Pen Drive. The Pen Drive can be kept inside a small Ziplock pouch. One may make an extra  copy in another Pen Drive and keep them in very safe place with the knowledge of the spouse and/or family members, so that even if the original one is lost/damaged, one still have a copy.

Finally, do not forget to share the User ID and password  with the spouse or any close family member. Many people in Chennai are regretting for not keeping their online documents. We propose to offer digitizing and e storing  as part of our Financial Planning services.
